The North Region Development Program (NRDP)
1988 - 2003

The objectives of the NRDP are to combat desertification by protecting the ecosystems of savannahs and forests, and to manage natural resources, especially large animals, by ensuring that the local populations benefit from them. A priority was given to implement an effective fight against poaching.

  • More than 130 guards are recruited and trained. Modern means (aircraft, 4x4 vehicles, radio communication system) are deployed.
  • 4 main stations are built with more than 1,000 km of track and 4 airfields which allow access to the most remote places of the zone quickly and at any time of the year.
  • The implementation of ecological monitoring has made it possible to monitor animal population dynamics and the project impact.
